BMC Helix Discovery Architecture & Sizing Design Service

16 Credits

This service provides BMC Helix Discovery reference architecture leadership to scale and industrialize an existing Discovery platform from ~60,000 CIs to 200,000+ CIs, including capacity planning, High Availability (“HA”)/Disaster Recovery (“DR”) design, storage strategy, scanner topology, and performance recommendations.

What you get:

BMC Helix will perform the following in one environment:

  • Requirements confirmation & scope alignment
    • Conduct up to five remote workshops to validate objectives, constraints, and success criteria
    • One playback session to validate assumptions before finalizing the design
  • Current-state assessment
    • Review existing Discovery architecture, sizing, scan approach, and entity fragmentation
    • Identify scaling bottlenecks and operational risks (performance, data flows, resilience)
  • Architecture & sizing study for ~200k+ CIs
    • Capacity planning for:
      • Daily scans, weekly large-scale scans, massive IP ranges
      • Rapid growth by entity/subsidiary
    • Recommendations on:
      • Infrastructure sizing (compute/memory, DB considerations, throughput drivers)
      • Scanner count and placement (distribution model, connectivity, segmentation)
      • Storage growth (forecasting, compaction strategy, retention approach)
      • Performance optimization (scan duration, throughput, platform stability)
  • Target architecture design (enterprise-grade)
    • Centralized Discovery platform model for the in-scope entities
    • Design covering:
      • High Availability (HA)
      • Disaster Recovery (DR/DRP)
      • Backup strategy (duration, restore objectives, operational model)
      • Data resilience and storage optimization
    • Recommended 3–5 year scalability view and guardrails for sustainable growth
  • Expert recommendations & validation (as applicable within the selected duration)
    • Best practices from similar large-scale enterprise environments
    • Incorporate feedback/validation from BMC field architecture and/or product teams where feasible within schedule

Customer will be responsible for:

  • Access to business owners, technical owners, and SMEs for workshops and decision-making
  • Discovery SMEs who can explain current architecture/sizing/connectivity and demo the platform as needed
  • Relevant artifacts (where available): existing diagrams, sizing notes, scan schedules, CI volumes, sync approach to ServiceNow, constraints/security/network rules

Assumptions / Out of scope:

  • Engagement duration is per the selected option
  • Remote delivery only, verbal + written in English
  • No hands-on implementation (advisory/design service only)
  • ServiceNow CMDB changes resulting from Discovery recommendations are Customers responsibility
  • Changes to internal infrastructure, networks, firewall rules, and communication channels are Customers responsibility
  • Additional scope (extended design cycles, extra entities, additional validation rounds beyond the selected option) requires additional credits/redemption of Success Catalog Offering(s).

Deliverables:

Using BMC Helix standard methodology and templates, the following Deliverables are in scope for this project and will be delivered:

Solution Design Document (SDD) (BMC Helix template), including at minimum:

  • Current-state summary & constraints
  • Target-state architecture (centralized model) with rationale
  • Sizing recommendations for 200k+ CIs and future growth
  • Scanner strategy (number/placement/topology) and scan execution approach
  • HA/DR architecture and operational considerations
  • Backup, storage, compaction, and data resilience strategy
  • Performance & scalability risks + mitigations
  • Implementation considerations and recommended next steps (for the follow-on phase)

Completion Criteria:

BMC Helix will have completed this service when either of the following first occurs: the SDD deliverable has been delivered to and approved by the Customer Project Manager, or the ten Business Days have been provided.

Definitions:

Country-Specific Staffing: Upon Customer’s request and BMC resource availability, BMC will deviate from BMC’s Standard Delivery model. BMC will work with Customer to understand and address their country-specific staffing requirements. The staffing choice from which country a BMC resource comes from will be mutually agreed to by BMC and Customer.

Standard Delivery: A mix of BMC consultants and project managers sourced from various BMC locations.
